Sooner or later, gambling costs money. Rather than serving as a caution, the house edge is simply the maths that finances the entire operation, unaffected by any bonus, filter or strategy. All that follows rests on this.
Decide before you start
Choose your acceptable loss amount ahead of that first deposit, rather than midway through a losing run. Choosing a limit while calm means it lasts; choosing one while chasing losses means it fails. Rather than expecting a return, view what you spend as simply the price of being entertained.
The tools in your account
- Deposit limit — a monthly, weekly or daily maximum on your payments in.
- Loss limit — puts a boundary on total net losses within a timeframe.
- Session reminder — a notice tracking how long you have been at it.
- Time-out — for a period you set, the account becomes locked.
- Self-exclusion — closes the account for a longer term.
Reducing a limit is effective immediately. Increasing a limit is intentionally slower, preventing removal right when it would matter most.
Warning signs
Look out for three tendencies before they take hold: gambling with funds intended for other purposes, trying to claw back a loss, and giving friends or family a smaller picture of the time and money actually spent. One of these signs on its own is not especially significant. Viewed together, all three matter.
Where to get help
There is no relationship between us and these organisations.
- BeGambleAware — 0808 8020 133 gets you free, confidential help around the clock.
- GamCare — free treatment and support, using that same national helpline number.
- Gamban — software preventing access to gambling sites across every device you use.
About GamStop. GamStop covers operators holding a Great Britain licence, so it may not apply on every platform. Blocking software on your devices and the self-exclusion tool in your account function whatever the operator's licensing jurisdiction.
Under-age gambling
Only adults aged 18 or above can hold accounts. Keep login details away from others and use parental control software if the device is shared. If a minor has opened an account, we shut it down and cancel the winnings.
